Clinical Requirements
 
 

Students will initially integrate on campus learning with a work-based learning experience when

students register and are placed into a clinical class. Clinical provide you with the opportunity to

work with experienced medical personnel in the clinical environment to enhanced the skills you’ve

learned in the lecture and laboratory, and are an  vital part of health care diploma programs. Our goal

 is to provide you and our clinical partners with a rewarding experience that will further your

knowledge and skills in your chosen filed. The information below with help you understand your

responsibilities as you master the skills to become a healthcare professional.

 

 

Clinical Scheduling

 

The Allied Healthcare College will schedule and/or approval all clinical or externship. If students are

aware of health care facilities that would like to offer opportunities for training, please provide this

information to the department. Under no circumstances should a student schedule their own

clinical or externship.

 

Clinical and or externship requires you to be available to work full or ½ shifts (mostly full)

in a medical facility in addition to any classes, work and /or family commitments you may

have. Before registering for these classes you should talk with your advisor/instructor to ensure you

 are able to commit to attending all of you clinical practice times. Instructors will make every effort to

accommodate other commitments however, our clinical space and time is limited. Clinical may

begin as early as 5:00 am and may end as late as 11:15 pm and may include some weekend days

 as well as normally designated holidays on the school calendar. Travel within the south Alabama

and possible north Alabama area may be required.

 

PRIOR to start a clinical you must complete the following requirements and provide the

documentation to AHC.Your clinical placement will not be guaranteed or assigned if you

 cannot met this deadline, and may mean that you cannot complete the course for which

you have registered.

 

  1. Documentation of negative TB skin test: Two Negative tests (within 1-3 weeks)

      A chest x-ray taken with the last year, if you were ever had a positive TB test.

  2. Full record of all immunizations MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Td

      Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) is a series of 3 injections, show proof

      of these vaccinaitons or proof of immunity by a titer (blood test). You will be

      given information on hepatitis B (a blood-borne disease) and if you choose

      not to receive the HBV, you will required to sign a form declining the immunization.

  3. Full vaccines are recommended during flu season.

  4. Proof of completion of an authorized BCLS or CPR within the last 2 years.

  5. Proof of completion of seven hours of HIV?AIDS education within the last 2 years.

  6. Proof or purchase of student liability insurance approximately $30 yearly.

 

 

Criminal Background Check (criminal background will not stop for recieve your education; however,

 depending on the serious of crime, how long, and other circumstances: some not all employees may refused to hire

you; check with the Board of Nurse, Board of Pharmacy, etc to gain more detail information)

 

Alabama criminal background check is required by some of our clinical facilities prior to beginning

 your clinical. There is a cost involve $25.00. For students in Pharmacy Technician program, this will

 be done when you apply for your Pharmacy Assistant license.

 

Professional Behavior and Appearance

Students may be required to purchase scrub uniforms or a lab coat for their clinical externships.
 Instructors will advise you of the requirements for your certificate. Shoe style is not standardized
however, shoes must be white (or mostly white), clean and close toed.
• A clean, neat appearance is expected; uniforms and shoes should be clean and not tattered.
• To avoid the danger of becoming caught in equipment, injury to patients and interference with patient care, long hair should be tied back, fingernails should be reasonably short and dangling jewelry such as bracelets and long earrings should not be worn at the facilities.
• Use of fragrance and after shave while working should be avoided as it can cause medical problems for certain patients
ID tags will be provide by the college and must be worn any time you are working in a clinical facility. Students will be charged $10.00 to replace a lost nametag. Individual clinical facilities may also provide you with their own ID badge, please ensure that it is returned at the end of your clinical experience.
 
Professional Behavior
 
Students are expected to present with a professional appearance and demeanor in the clinical environment. You will be assigned a mentor at the clinical site and monitored by college instructors. Students are expected to be on time for their shift, return from coffee and meal breaks on time and communicate directly with their instructor if attendance is an issue.
Students are expected to follow the policies and procedures of the facility and instructions from both facility staff and college instructors. This is for your safety and most importantly, the safety of the patients you will be working with. Unsafe practices will be documented and discussed with the student. If improvement does not occur, the student may be dismissed from the program.
 
VIOLATIONS OF PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY
 
Patient confidentiality is a professional / ethical responsibility of all healthcare professionals and as such, is a responsibility of all Allied Health students. Policies and procedures regarding patient confidentiality will be discussed both in the class and at the clinical facilities and, in some cases; students may be required to sign a patient confidentiality agreement with the clinical facility.
Examples of violations of patient confidentiality include but are not limited to:
• Removal of any patient records that have possible identifiers
• Any patient related discussion that may be overheard by lay persons or that occur in any location other than the immediate patient-care or classroom / learning environment.
Students determined to have violated patient confidentiality by faculty or clinical staff may be dismissed from the program.

HUC 165 hrs – 2-3 shifts / week
Mental Health Technician 120 hrs
Optometrist Assistant Technician 240 hrs
•Nurse Assistant 75 hrs (40 hrs on-site)
